Meet the islander

Hi, I’m Charliefoo. I’ve been a gamer and a bookworm since childhood, and both are still an important part of my life.

Lately, I’m focusing on reading, creating, and running, enjoying a quiet but interesting rhythm. I love tea, long conversations, and capturing everyday scenes with my phone. I keep making new things to find moments of flow.

The story of this blog

  1. 2008–2013

    I started writing on NetEase Blog, made lasting friends, and gradually formed the habit of keeping a journal.

  2. 2013–2016

    I moved to Lofter and continued creating. After moving to Shanghai, work and life grew busier, and writing went on pause.

  3. 2019

    I started writing again on Typlog and gave the blog its name: 付之一笑, or Foo-Z.

  4. 2023

    I rebuilt the blog with Notion, Vercel, and GitHub, bringing more of my attention back to creating content.

  5. 2024

    I joined Forever Blog, committing to keep writing and updating for at least ten years.

  6. 2025

    I rebuilt the blog as a static site with Astro for a faster reading experience.

  7. 2026

    I completely reimagined 付之一笑 as a full-screen island game scene called Harbor Island. Articles and creations now live in buildings you can click to explore. Changing weather, animal neighbors, and passing boats make it a little world for wandering and reading.

How I write and live

Words that travel through time

Every piece carries my own perspective. I try to be honest about my limits and what I think at the time, while accepting that those thoughts may later seem naive or one-sided.

I keep revisiting and editing older pieces so that ideas which stand the test of time can grow again. I want to tend this small digital space with the care of a gardener.

Free, yet restrained

Freedom is where writing starts; restraint is its boundary. I try to look at a question from different angles and draw on ideas from different fields to understand the complexities of everyday life.

I want to keep questioning, take time to analyze, and leave room to revise my judgment. I hope every piece I write can stand that kind of scrutiny.

Recording a simple life

I try to put my energy into what matters, reduce unnecessary decisions, and leave more room for creating. For me, a simple life rests on three practices:

  • Move regularly, caring for both the body and the way I feel.
  • Keep a steady rhythm of reading and writing, and keep thinking.
  • Notice the world’s diversity and look beyond familiar sources of information.
